A Drink From Downton Abbey: The White Lady

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

You've been craving the tiniest bit of spring or summer to come into your life and then finally it happens... The weather breaks and warmth fills the soul. Here is the perfect celebratory drink no matter the weather.

The White Lady cocktail was created about 100 years ago at the American Bar at the Savoy in London. According to the "Downton Abbey Cocktail Book", where I found this great libation, it was so famous a cocktail shaker of it was buried in the walls of the bar during a renovation in 1927. It's a crowd pleaser that is a balance of sweet and citrus that is fun but not sickening. One is a great way to start an evening and imbibe in the beauty of the 1920's. Here is my variation below. Cheers!

Ingredients

2 fl oz Bombay Sapphire Gin

3/4 fl oz Fresh Lemon Juice (The juice of half a lemon)

1/2 fl oz Orange Liquer (I use Belle Orange)

1 1/2 Teaspoon Simple Syrup

Method

Combine all of the ingredients in a shaker. Add ice. Shake hard for 8-10 seconds and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
