I’ve been a James Bond fan as long as I can remember. My mother and I would often watch the movies when a marathon would come on TV and certainly my mom, dad and I would never miss a new movie at the theater. Now my wife and boys are learning to love the franchise.
This cocktail, right out of 007, will leave you stirred for sure and maybe even shaken, the Vesper, mentioned in Casino Royale. Many call it The James Bond Cocktail. I wanted to sample the drink for years and on a trip to Estes Park, Colorado I was chatting with a restaurant bartender who made me one. It has a rather rare vermouth so not everyone will have it, called Lillet Blanc. Now I seem to always order these when I want something clean, dry and sophisticated to start a great meal off right during cocktails. Sometimes I even fold my hands and with an evil laugh tell the waiter to “impress me” like a sinister Specter villain! Mwahaha! Then, we both laugh and the waiter turns pale.
This recipe finds it way to us from the Anthracite Bar at the Great Northern Hotel in London where you ‘ll feel just like you are in a Bond Film. Hopefully you are on the sophisticated side of the story and not the shoot’em-up-bang-bang parts! Chill your best martini glass for half and hour. Aston Martin and tux are optional.
